This Independence Day, get tipsy without drying yourself out. While liquor is always dehydrating, you can choose cocktails that taste great and actually boost your overall hydration. An adult’s hydration requirement actually doubles during the summer, so you have to pay extra attention in the warmer months. We’ve got some great recipes for hydrating cocktails that will actually help to hit your water intake quota. Of course, moderation is still key when there’s alcohol involved!
While we wouldn’t say any cocktail is exactly super healthy, these July 4th cocktails are made with fresh fruit juices and are as close as you can get to drinking healthily. Kill two birds with one straw and stay hydrated while enjoying a cocktail.
Hydrating Strawberry Martini
This cocktail, formulated by 18 & Greene Steakhouse at Los Suenos Marriot Ocean & Golf Resort, features Absolut vodka, basil, and strawberry. These hydrating berries are 92% water and studies show that people who eat one serving of strawberries per day tend to have higher blood levels of the B vitamin.
Ingredients:
2 ounces of vodka
2 basil leaves
1 ounce of strawberry juice*
2 lime wedges
Directions:
Use a muddler to crush the lime and basil in order to release natural oils. Mix the crushed lime wedges and basil into the shaker with strawberry juice, ice, and vodka. Shake well, serve in a martini glass and enjoy.
*You can make strawberry juice by blending two cups of strawberries with two teaspoons of lemon juice. If you want to make it seedless, strain it through a sieve.
Hydrating Orange Tiki Punch
The adult version of fruit punch, the fresh-squeezed punch at the Hilton Orlando Bonnet Creek offers pineapple juice, orange juice, Grey Goose L’Orange Vodka, Malibu Passion Fruit Rum and Bittermens Tiki Bitters.
Ingredients:
1 ounce Grey Goose L’Orange Vodka
1 ounce Malibu Passion Fruit Rum
.5 ounce Amaretto Di Soronno
5 drops Bittermens Tiki Bitters
1.5 ounces pineapple juice
1.5 ounces orange juice
.25 ounce grenadine
Directions:
Combine all ingredients in a mixing glass. Cover and shake vigorously. Pour into a 16 oz. glass. All together into a mixing glass. Add a dash of Rose’s Grenadine for a sinker at the end. Finally garnish with an orange slice with a cherry on top.
The Hydrating Guava Bushido Slam
The refreshing Bushido Slam served at Wyndham Grand Rio Mar’s Shimas features sake, fresh ginger, lychee syrup, guava puree, and club soda.
Ingredients:
2 ounces sake
1 teaspoon fresh ginger
2 ounces lychee syrup
2 ounces guava puree
Directions:
Muddle the fresh ginger, combine all ingredients and shake well. Top with club soda.
