Start your morning off right with this protein-packed, nutrient-dense strawberry spinach superfood smoothie.  This shake is ideal pre- or post- workout, as it combines protein and quick, easily-digested carbs. I promise you will not even taste the spinach—this nutritional powerhouse tastes like a dessert!  Plus there are major health benefits to all of the ingredients in this superfood smoothie.

Spinach: high in vitamins A, C, and K. It’s also a good source of iron, calcium, and potassium, which we sometimes have a hard time getting enough of. These three nutrients are especially beneficial to active women.

Strawberries: high in Vitamin C (which has many health benefits in itself), strawberries can help fight inflammation, and are filled with antioxidants.

Chia Seeds: an ancient “superfood,” chia seeds are a digestive aid and provide omega-3 fatty acids (which are particularly beneficial to brain, skin, joints, and heart).

Hemp Hearts: a source of omega-3 & omega-6 fatty acids, hemp hearts can help regulate the metabolism.

Protein: builds and repairs muscles. Whey protein  is good to consume post-workout after you have just broken down your muscle tissues helps make you feel full longer, and is a key ingredients in this superfood smoothie.


1 cup milk of choice (almond, cashew, soy, dairy…up to you)

1 scoop All Natural Vanilla or Strawberry whey

2 cups spinach

1/2 cup chopped strawberries (fresh or frozen)

1/2 tablespoon pure vanilla extract

1/2 tablespoon chia seeds

1 teaspoon hemp hearts

about 5 ice cubes of not using frozen berries for a little added thickness

Stevia to taste

Optional: you can add 1/3-1/2 cup of Greek yogurt for extra protein and creaminess.


Simply toss everything in a blender and mix until smooth. You could also stir in the chia seeds by hand if you would like to preserve their texture. The longer you let the shake sit, the thicker it will get due to the “gel” that forms around the seeds.

I come from a background of cardio-based training- I was a competitive distance swimmer for 8 years growing up, then segued into running track. Despite being in physically good shape, I never achieved the “toned” body I wanted, as I didn’t realize how little muscle my body had. About two years ago, I started lifting weights as my primary form of exercise. At this same time, I also started following a flexible dieting approach. The combination of these two concepts has transformed me physically, but more importantly, mentally. I am strong in both capacities, and have never felt better about myself.
